TTile Streak

Eight letters, G, A, R, D, E, N, E and R, spell GARDENER. The same eight letters also build shorter words like GANDER and RANGED. Type any eight letters into this finder and it checks them the same way, against Tile Streak's own word list.

How to use it

  1. Type your letters, up to eight, in any order.
  2. Add a ? for any letter you don't know yet.
  3. Set a pattern such as G_RD_N_R if you already know several spots.
  4. Read the list, sorted most common first, with a meaning shown wherever our data has one.

At eight letters the number of possible arrangements is large enough that guessing by hand gets slow fast. A finder built for the length skips the guessing and returns the full list of real words your letters allow, filtered by whatever you already know about the spots.

Letters versus a pattern

The letters field and the pattern field solve different problems. Type letters alone and the finder treats them as a pool, checking every arrangement for a real eight-letter word the way GANDER and RANGED both turn up inside GARDENER's own letters. Set a pattern such as G_RD_N_R instead, and it only returns words that fit those exact spots, whether or not the rest of your letters are locked in. Letters alone are best for exploring; a pattern earns its keep once a crossword or another puzzle has already confirmed a few of the spots for you.

Tips for longer searches

Start without a pattern. See the full range of eight-letter words your letters can make before narrowing to a specific arrangement.

Watch for shorter words inside your letters. Not every combination of eight letters makes a real eight-letter word, but it will usually make several shorter ones, like GANDER and RANGED coming out of GARDENER's letters. Lower the length filter if the eight-letter list comes up short.

Use the pattern field for crossword-style clues. If a crossword or another puzzle has already filled in a few letters, a pattern search is faster than scanning a full word list by eye.

When a search comes back empty

Not every eight letters spell a real eight-letter word. If your first search is empty, check a pattern for a typo, since one wrong underscore or letter can rule out the only word that would have matched. If the pattern is clean, lower the length filter and look for shorter words hiding in the same letters instead. An empty list at eight letters does not mean the tool missed something, it means those letters, in that pattern, do not spell anything on our list at that length.

The 9-letter finder is the next step up, and the main word finder covers every length from 3 to 11 in one place. Questions

How do I find an 8 letter word from specific letters?

Type the letters you have into the finder. It checks every order against our word list and returns the eight-letter words they can build, most common first.

Can I search for shorter words from the same letters too?

Yes. Set the length filter to anything from 3 to 11, or leave it open to see every length at once, including words hiding inside your eight letters.

What if I only know a few of the letters?

Add a ? for each letter you don't have, or use a pattern with underscores for the empty spots and the letters you know in their exact places.

Are the results real, checkable words?

Yes. Everything returned comes from our own word list, the same one Tile Streak's letter games use, not a raw dictionary dump.

Do results include a meaning?

Where our word data has one, yes, shown right next to the word.
