How to play
- Type any five-letter German word and press Enter.
- Read the tiles:
- Green: right letter, right spot.
- Yellow: the letter is in the word, in a different spot.
- Gray: the letter is not in the word.
- Find the word within six guesses.
Repeated letters follow the same rule as every game here: each letter in the answer can only color one tile in your guess, however many times your guess repeats it.
Why a German word game is not just a translation
Swapping the word list for German changes more than the vocabulary. German capitalizes every noun, but the game only cares about the letters, so capitalization never changes how a guess is scored. Players who are fluent in German will notice these patterns immediately. Players who are learning will find the game doubles as light practice: matching sound and spelling, one guess at a time.
The page itself stays in English. Instructions, buttons and messages are the same as every other game on Tile Streak. Only the hidden word, and the words the game accepts as guesses, are in German.
Tips for playing in German
Open with a common letter shape for the language, not an English habit. A strong English opener is not automatically a strong German opener. Letter frequency is different enough that it is worth building a separate favorite word for this page.
Watch accented letters closely. A tile for an accented letter is scored as that letter, not its plain version, so mixing the two up costs a guess.
Use the game to build vocabulary, not just to win. Because the hidden word is always a real German word, working through the colors is also a way to see how the language is put together, one word at a time.
Do not translate the clue in your head. Think in German while you are narrowing the word. Translating back and forth after every guess slows you down and can hide a pattern that would be obvious in the original language.
Keep the keyboard in view. Gray letters on the keyboard are your cheat sheet for what not to type, in any language.
Play it more than once if you are learning. A single round teaches you one word's worth of patterns. A few rounds in Unlimited, back to back, start to show you the shapes that repeat across many German words, which is where the real vocabulary benefit shows up.
Who this page is for
Two kinds of players tend to land here: people fluent in German who want the same daily habit they already have in English, and people learning German who want practice that feels like a game rather than a drill. Both get the identical mechanic. The only thing that changes between them is how much guessing comes from vocabulary versus pattern recognition, and that balances out over a few rounds either way.
Daily and unlimited
The Daily German word is the same for everyone today and counts toward your streak. When you finish, share a grid of colors, with no letters in it.
Unlimited gives you a new German word every time. It never touches your streak and never uses an upcoming daily word.
