TTile Streak

What's on this list

Nine letters is long enough to feel like a real word puzzle. Every entry here is exactly nine letters, checked against a dictionary, with a meaning attached so the list works for more than one purpose. It is not a finished, closed set. We add to it as it grows.

Words like butterfly, chocolate, telephone and adventure are the kind of thing you will find: familiar words that happen to land on nine letters, not obscure ones chosen just to be difficult.

How to use the list

Browse the list, or search for a word you already have in mind. Open any entry to see its pronunciation, part of speech, a plain meaning and an example sentence.

Play this list starts a board using only these words. It runs the same as the standard word game: six guesses, green for the right letter in the right place, yellow for the right letter in the wrong place, gray for a letter that is not in the word.

Tips for nine-letter words

Look for two smaller words stitched together. Compounds are common at nine letters, like mountains, snowflake or other combinations of two shorter words. Spot the seam and the whole word gets easier to hold in your head.

Watch for a prefix or suffix. Endings like -ATION, -MENT and -NESS, or a starting piece like RE- or UN-, show up often at this length. Recognizing the ending narrows the rest of the word fast.

Break it into syllables. Say the word slowly. Most nine-letter words split into three or four chunks, and guessing chunk by chunk is easier than guessing letter by letter.

Expect a repeated letter. Longer words often reuse a vowel or a common consonant. If a guess comes back with fewer colored tiles than you expect, a repeat is a likely reason.

What makes nine letters different

Five and six-letter games reward a strong opening guess because there are relatively few possible answers left after one or two tries. At nine letters, the opposite is often true: the word is long enough that a good guess narrows things down by elimination rather than by nailing the whole shape at once. Patience beats a lucky first guess here.

For teachers

A length-based list is easy to slot into a spelling or vocabulary lesson because every word is already the same size, which keeps a worksheet or test fair across students.

  • Print a short list. Choose five or six words with their meanings for a handout, rather

than printing the whole page.

  • Pair spelling with meaning. Ask students to spell the word, then use it correctly in a

sentence of their own, not just the one shown here.

  • Use it as a warm-up. A single word from the list, read aloud, works as a two-minute

starter before a longer lesson.

  • Pace it to the class. Nine letters suits upper elementary and older students; younger

classes may do better starting shorter.

Keep exploring

If nine letters felt easy, try ten-letter words next, or step back to eight-letter words for something gentler. The nine-letter word game turns this same length into a daily puzzle, and the word finder helps when you are stuck on a specific pattern.

Questions

What does each entry on the list show?

Every word lists its pronunciation, its part of speech, a plain meaning and an example sentence. Open a word to see the full entry.

Can I play a game with just these words?

Yes. Play this list deals guesses only from nine-letter words on this page, with the same green, yellow and gray colors as the daily word game.

Is this the complete list of nine-letter words?

No. It is a working list we keep adding to, and every word is checked against a dictionary before it is added. Come back for more over time.

Why are some common words missing?

Plurals, proper nouns and words that could be unkind or confusing out of context are left off, even when they are common. A short, solid list beats a long, messy one.

Are nine-letter words harder to spell than shorter ones?

Usually. More letters means more places to make a mistake, and nine-letter words often combine a smaller word with a prefix or a suffix.

Can this list be used for a spelling test?

Yes. Pick a handful of words from the list for a custom spelling round, or print the page for an offline test.
