TTile Streak

What's on this list

Six letters is long enough to hide real variety: a word that starts and ends very differently, or one with a repeated letter buried in the middle. This page lists six-letter words with a plain meaning for each, plus a board that plays straight from the same list.

Reading each entry

Each entry shows how to say the word, its part of speech, a simple meaning, and an example sentence. At six letters, words start to carry more than one common meaning more often than shorter words do, so the example sentence is worth reading even when the word looks familiar.

Six-letter words that start with L

L is a common starting letter at six letters, and LE specifically shows up a lot. LEGEND (a famous story passed down, or a famous person) and LESSON (something taught or learned) both start with LE. Further into the alphabet, LIQUID and LIZARD are two more common six-letter L words. If you're hunting for a specific starting letter, a word finder search with that letter fixed in the first spot narrows things down fast.

The funny side of six letters

Some six-letter words are just fun to say out loud. WIGGLE is a small side-to-side movement, the kind a puppy's tail makes. SQUAWK is a short, harsh cry, like a bird makes when startled. Neither is a rude word, they're just words with some bounce built into their sound, and six letters gives a word just enough room for that.

Tips for six-letter words

Look for the double letter. LEGEND has one E repeated, and plenty of six-letter words hide a second copy of a letter you'd otherwise expect once. It's one of the most common reasons a guess falls just short.

Fix the letter you know, then search. Once you know a word starts with L, or with LE, narrowing a search to that pattern turns a long list into a short one.

Read the meaning before you assume. A word that looks like it should only be an action, like SQUAWK, is worth checking; here it works as both a noun and a verb, and the example sentence shows which is meant.

Using this list in class

Six letters is a comfortable length for older elementary and middle school spelling work. A few ways to use a list like this:

  • Print a themed set. Pull out all the words that start with L, or all the ones that read as

funny, for a quick worksheet.

  • Talk about doubled letters. LEGEND and words like it are a good jumping-off point for a

short lesson on why some letters repeat.

  • Send the class to the board. Once meanings are covered, the board built from this list

turns the same words into a guessing game.

This is not an official or state-standard list. It's built from dictionary sources we can point back to, and we're not stating how many words are on it while the list is still being built.

More lengths, more play

Step up to the 7-letter word list, or back down to 4-letter words. Prefer guessing to reading? The 6-letter word game is the daily puzzle version of this length, with a new hidden word each day.
