How practice and test mode work

Each round on this page pulls 10 words from the 7th grade list. Your browser reads the word aloud first, then reads a short sentence using it, and you type what you heard.

In practice mode, an exact spelling is marked correct straight away. If you're one letter off, the game tells you that you were close and gives you another try at that same word before moving on. It's built for working through a list at your own pace, not a strict pass or fail.

In test mode, you get one try per word and no retries. At the end of the 10 words, you get a score out of 10, plus a printable version of the word list and a matching answer sheet, so the same round works on paper as well as on screen.

Both modes read the word and its example sentence using your browser's built-in voice, the same voice your device already uses elsewhere. There's no separate studio recording or narrator behind it, just whatever text-to-speech voice your browser already provides.

A few example words, to show the format

These three are examples only, not words from a live round.

Horizon: "The sun dropped below the horizon as we packed up camp."

Achieve: "It takes steady practice to achieve real progress on a new skill."

Triumph: "Their comeback in the final quarter felt like a real triumph."

A real round would read each word like this, sentence and all, before you type your answer.

Tips for 7th grade spellers

Watch for double letters. Longer words at this level often hide a doubled consonant. Listening for where the word seems to pause or stress can hint at where it belongs.

Use the sentence to settle sound-alikes. Several 7th grade words share a sound with a different word spelled another way. The example sentence usually points to the right one.

Break the word into chunks as you hear it. Saying it back syllable by syllable, even quietly, is easier to get right than trying to picture the whole word at once.

Practice before you test. Run a list once in practice mode, using the retries on close misses to fix the tricky words, then take the same list as a scored test.

Space out your review. Coming back to a missed word a day or two later tends to stick more firmly than repeating it five times in one sitting.

For teachers

A 10-word round is short enough to fit into a warm-up or the last few minutes of class. Run it in practice mode as a shared activity first, then switch to test mode for an individual, scored check on the same words.

The printable word list and answer sheet from test mode work well as a paper backup, a take-home sheet, or a way to mark a class set without every student needing a screen at the same time. The word list is still being built out, so treat it as a resource that grows rather than a fixed worksheet, and check back for new additions.

Questions

How does spelling practice work for 7th grade?

A round is 10 words from this page's list. Your browser reads each word aloud, then reads a sentence using it. In practice mode, an exact answer is correct, and a one-letter miss shows 'close' and lets you try again.

What happens in test mode?

Test mode gives one try per word instead of a retry, and scores the round out of 10 at the end. You also get a printable word list and answer sheet.

What voice reads the words aloud?

Your browser's own built-in voice, the same one it already uses to read other pages aloud. There's no separate recording or narrator behind it.

Where does the word list come from?

We're building it from teaching materials and dictionaries, choosing words that suit a typical 7th grade reading level. It isn't tied to one state's standards or a single textbook, and we're not publishing a word count while it's still being built out.

Can this be used as a classroom warm-up?

Yes. A round is short, 10 words, so it fits into a few minutes at the start or end of a lesson, in either practice or test mode.

Is there a list for a different grade?

Yes, including a page for 6th grade. More grades are being added as their word lists are built.
