How Practice and Test work

A round pulls ten words set for fourth grade. In Practice and Test mode alike, the word and its example sentence are read aloud using your browser's built-in voice, so students hear the word and how it is used in context before they spell it.

Practice mode rewards getting there, not getting it first time. A correct spelling moves the round along. A spelling that is one letter off shows "close" and hands the same word back for another attempt, so a fourth grader can work through a tricky prefix or suffix without the round stopping.

Test mode is one try per word, a score out of ten, and a printable word list with an answer sheet once the round finishes. That is enough for a weekly quiz that also leaves a paper trail for a folder or a parent to sign.

Fourth grade words start to include things like bridge, decide and quarter, words with less obvious spelling patterns, silent letters, or a meaning that changes with context. The read-aloud sentence exists to make that context clear before typing starts.

Tips for fourth grade spelling

Look for the root word. Many fourth grade words add a prefix or suffix to something simpler. Spotting the root, like the base in a longer word, makes the whole word less intimidating.

Say the syllables. Breaking a longer word into parts out loud before typing it usually catches a missed letter early.

Use the sentence for homophones. Some words sound like another word entirely. The read sentence is there specifically to make the meaning, and so the correct spelling, obvious.

Practice, then test, on the same list. Doing one or two Practice rounds before switching to Test mode turns the test into a check of learning rather than a guess.

Keep an eye on repeated misses. If the same word or pattern keeps showing "close," it is worth a slower, separate look rather than more speed rounds.

For teachers and parents

Built to work whether it is one student at a kitchen table or a full class on shared devices.

Printing. After a Test mode round, print the word list and the answer sheet directly from the page. Useful for a homework sheet, a study guide, or keeping a paper record of results.

Sharing the page. A single link covers a whole class or family. Everyone who opens it gets the same round of ten words, which makes it simple to compare results or run it as a shared class activity.

Using it in class. No account, no login, nothing to install, so it works on any shared classroom device straight away. A common setup: Practice mode as review during the week, Test mode on the day of the actual quiz, with the printed sheet filed afterward.

No pressure by design. There is no leaderboard and no built-in way to compare one student's score against another's. A "close" result in Practice is a nudge to try again, nothing more.

Questions

What grade level is this page written for?

Fourth grade. Words include more syllables, common prefixes and suffixes, and a few homophones, paced for students moving past simple sound-outs.

How does Practice mode work?

A round is ten words. Type what you hear and it is marked right, or if you are one letter off the game shows 'close' and gives you another try at that word.

How does Test mode work?

One try per word across ten words, with a score out of ten at the end, plus a printable word list and answer sheet for review away from the screen.

Is the audio a real person reading?

It is your browser's built-in voice. The word and its example sentence are read aloud that way, so no audio files to load and it works the same on any modern browser.

Is this the official 4th grade word list for my state?

No. We do not claim this is any state's official or standard list. It is a working set for the grade, put together from documented teaching sources and checked by hand.

Is there a cost or sign-up?

No. It is free to play, with no account and nothing to install. Scores for the day stay in the browser on that device.
