TTile Streak

How Practice and Test work

A round is ten words. In both modes, the word and its example sentence are read aloud using your browser's built-in voice, so your child hears the word said clearly and hears it used in a sentence before typing it. That sentence is there to help with meaning, not to spell out the word letter by letter.

Practice mode is for learning. Type the word you hear. Get it exactly right and the round moves on. Get it one letter off and the game says "close" and lets you try again right away. Nothing is scored and nothing is timed, so a tricky word can take two or three goes without any pressure.

Test mode is for checking what has stuck. Each word gets one try, the round is scored out of ten, and at the end there is a printable word list and a printable answer sheet. That makes it easy to hand a child a sheet of paper for extra practice, or to keep a record of a test done on screen.

Second grade words lean into common patterns: short vowel sounds, simple blends, and a few words that just need to be seen and said a few times, like pocket or whale. The goal at this age is steady exposure, not speed.

Tips for second grade spelling

Say it back. Before typing, have your child repeat the word out loud. Saying a word like bunny slowly, sound by sound, often catches a tricky spot before it becomes a mistake.

Use Practice first, always. Test mode works best after a round or two of Practice on the same words. Going in cold turns a learning moment into a guessing game.

Notice the sentence. The read-aloud sentence gives context. If a child spells the sound right but the word still looks wrong, talk through what the word means and where else they have seen it.

Short sessions beat long ones. Ten words is already a full round. One round a day, done calmly, teaches more than one long session done in a rush.

Celebrate the retry. A "close" result in Practice mode is not a mistake to fix quickly, it is the game doing its job. Let your child enjoy getting it on the second try.

For teachers and parents

This page is built to be handed to a child directly, or used as a small group activity.

Printing. After a Test mode round, print the word list and the answer sheet. That gives you a paper copy for a folder, a take-home sheet, or a quiet desk activity that does not need a screen.

Sharing the page. The page link itself is all you need to share. Send it home for practice, or open it on a classroom screen and read results out as a group, since every student on the page gets the same round of ten words.

Using it in class. Because there is no account and no sign-in, it works on shared devices without setup. Run Practice mode as a warm-up activity, then Test mode as a short, low-stakes check near the end of a unit. Scores stay on the device, so there is nothing to manage beyond the printed sheet if you want a record.

No pressure, on purpose. There is no leaderboard and no comparison between students built into the page. A "close" result is a nudge to try again, not a mark against anyone.

Questions

What grade is this page for?

It is written for second grade, with words and sentences chosen for that age. If a word feels too easy or too hard, the first grade and third grade pages are right next door.

How does Practice mode work?

A round is ten words. Type what you hear. A correct spelling moves you on, and a word that is one letter off shows 'close' and lets you try again, so mistakes are part of learning, not a stop sign.

How does Test mode work?

Test mode is one try per word, ten words a round, with a score at the end. It also gives you a printable word list and answer sheet, useful for practicing away from a screen.

Can my child hear the words out loud?

Yes. The word and its example sentence are read aloud using your browser's built-in voice, so a child can spell by ear before they read the word themselves.

Where do the words come from?

Words are being pulled together for second grade from documented teaching sources and checked by hand. We are not claiming this is any state's official list, just a working set for this grade.

Does it cost anything or need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and nothing to install. Progress for the day is kept in the browser on the device being used.
